Whitney Dominates At DuQuoin
DuQuoin, Ill. - It was a perfect night for Reed Whitney. The Jasper, Indiana racer went quickest in hot laps, charged from his fourth place starting position to collect a heat race win, and led flag-to-flag to score his first career feature win at DuQuoin.
Whitney and Daryn Stark brought the field to the green flag for the Outlaw Non-Wing main event inside the Southern Illinois Center at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
Just two laps into the twenty-five lap event, contact between JB Gilbert and Stark caused a chain reaction accident that ultimately sent Chevy Boyer tumbling into the catch fence in turns one and two. Boyer was able to continue.
Whitney maintained his lead on the restart with Gilbert in tow as the front runners tucked in single file around the bottom of the racing surface. A caution at the midpoint of the event for the Drew Sherman entry bunched the field back up.
Following the restart, Kole Kirkman and Tyler Vantoll got upside down in turn number one, bringing the field to red flag conditions once again. A pair of caution flags for Robert Parish Jr and Jaxon Bishop would give way to a longer stretch of green flag racing laps for the second half of the contest.
Alex Burgener charged from his thirteenth starting position to nestle into third behind Whitney and Gilbert as the laps ticked away.
Gilbert remained glued to Whitney's tail tank through lapped traffic in the closing laps but was unable to make a move. Whitney would lead wire-to-wire to collect his first career Micro Sprint feature win at DuQuoin.
Gilbert, Burgener, Daniel Robinson, and Rylan Gray rounded out the top five finishers.
The Southern Illinois Center at DuQuoin roars back to life on February 23rd and 24th with six divisions in competition; Winged Outlaw, Outlaw Non-Wing, Modlites, A-Class, Restricted, and Junior Sprints.
